Building Southern Nevada's Educated Workforce

Following the election there are active discussions on how Southern Nevada in particular, will find the necessary resources to build an improved education system that will allow a future workforce meet the demands of the state's new diversity into technology and manufacturing.

While there is going to be a huge debate over the larger picture, one suggestion is to look at what is currently working and where the brightest graduates are coming from and replicate this.

During the summer, it was widely reported that Magnet School program that has established highly focused schools within schools that concentrate on everything from the performing arts to math and science had significant enrolment numbers to where there were lotteries used to select the finalists.

In one case Clark High School had more than 1300 enrolments for 200 spots for the Math and Science degree program. Common sense says that it would be beneficial to expand the Magnet program into additional aged and under performing schools to build a larger base of STEM students.

As we are directly involved with members of NSHE and the state universities, we hope our suggestions will be taken under advisement.
