Outlets added to public street lamps as a test

Electric car owners now can recharge their cars at lamp post charging sockets ​ 

A German company called Ubitricity have begun putting charging sockets on lamp posts in a bid to increase the ease of electric car owners charging their vehicles.

 

Ubitricity says it hopes the pilot project in Berlin, with just ten lamp post charging stations, could if successful be rolled out across the country and perhaps the rest of the world.

The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) officially adopted version 4.2 of the Bluetooth core specification this week. Key updates in 4.2 improve privacy and increase speed, and a soon-to-be ratified profile will enable IP connectivity.

 

“Bluetooth 4.2 is all about continuing to make Bluetooth Smart the best solution to connect all the technology in your life – from personal sensors to your connected home. In addition to the improvements to the specification itself, a new profile known as IPSP enables IPv6 for Bluetooth, opening entirely new doors for device connectivity,” said Mark Powell, executive director of the Bluetooth SIG.

The US Department of Defense has awarded EaglePicher, a company with a long history in the defense industry, $22 million in funding for Phase II of the Lithium-Ion Battery for Military Applications (LIMA) project. The program’s goal is to assure the affordable production of items deemed essential for national defense.

 

EaglePicher plans to construct a 100,000-square-foot expansion at its existing manufacturing facility in Joplin, Missouri to accommodate the new production.

Key Decisions On Drones Likely From Congress

Federal Aviation Administration officials have said they want to release proposed rules before the end of this month, but other government and industry officials say they are likely to be delayed until January. Meanwhile, except for a small number of companies that have received FAA exemptions, a ban on commercial drone flights remains in place. Even after rules are proposed, it is likely to be two or three years before regulations become final.

 

Nevada has been selected as one of the 6 states authorized for UAV testing prior to the complete ruling. RVA is involved with a number of UAV technology companies and the development of their lithium battery requirements.

Starting in 2015 Chalmers University of Technology from Sweden will be joining the edX platform and delivering global education through ChalmersX where it will deliver its MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) free of charge. The first ChalmersX MOOC will be an introduction to the "super-material" graphene: Introduction to Graphene Science and Technology. The subject is at the forefront of research, and EU's biggest research initiative ever – Graphene Flagship – is based at Chalmers.
